After she won the 2009 World Athletics championships in Berlin, German scientists who studied her throwing action said the Australian was an “anomoly” because at a certain point where other throwers slowed down mid-action, she accelerated. A former basketballer Samuels - whose sister Jamie plays for the Sydney Flames in the WNBL – decided to pursue the discus because she fell in love with it. She joins the likes of Usain Bolt, as only one of seven athletes in the world to have won the World Youth Championships, World Junior Championships and World Championships. At 21 she became the youngest world champion for discus and has her sights on adding an Olympic gold medal to her already impressive collection. Dani enjoys a big following in Australia and Europe and in Sydney she especially is appreciated by the Parramatta Eels Fans where she is a No.1 jersey holder for this NRL club, Dani trains with Eels conditioning staff and has been embraced by the club as one of their own.
