World discus champion Dani Samuels made a solid start at the Doha Diamond League meeting on Friday, managing a podium finish. Lining up in the opening event of the first meet of the series, Samuels started with a throw of 64.67 metres that gave her the lead of the competition to the penultimate round, where she was pipped by world championships silver medallist Yarelis Barrios of Cuba with a heave of 64.90m. Limited to only four throws, Samuels followed her opening attempt with a foul and marks of 64.43m and 58.60m respectively. Aiming to throw consistently above 64m in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October, Samuels believes her performance in Doha shows she is in good shape.
