Albie Thomas Men’s Mile E-mail

Fifty years ago Albie Thomas ran the first sub-4 minute mile in NSW, when, competing on the grass track at the Sydney Sports Ground, he ran 3:58.8 - the fourth fastest time in the world that year. In time Thomas would run a lifetime best of 3:58.3 in 1964.

In an illustrious career Thomas competed at three Olympics – 1956, 1960 and 1964.

Commonwealth Games athlete, Jeremy Roff, will target a sub-4 minute mile in this race that honours one of Australian athletics legends to confirm his Commonwealth Games preparation is on track.

His training partner, James Nipperess, will push him in the race. Nipper’s first coach was Albie Thomas. A strong line up of juniors will also run, including James Kaan, who narrowly missed Commonwealth Games selection and Joshua Wright, who came close to World Junior selection.
